A local ecclesiastical leader said to me recently, “Thomas, these days it’s easier to buy sex at the park than to get a hug at church.” True story!

It reminds me of a comment we often hear at Lower Lights: “I love practicing meditation in community but I get so nervous with the small group exercises.”

There’s just something scary about vulnerability, isn’t there?

It’s ironic that what we so sincerely seek–genuine, meaningful contact with one another–also represents the greatest threat to us. Namely, we have to first be vulnerable and allow ourselves to be seen if any real encounter is ever going to take place.

At the upcoming gathering, we will practice bringing greater awareness to the sense of fear and anxiety that can arise when we encounter the other. Drawing from principles of mindfulness and adult development, we will learn to soften at our edges and invite more meaningful contact in all of our relationships.
